Jonathan Adler: Accessorising and Colour Ideas

If you're looking for a couple of inspiring decorating reads for the Easter break, then Jonathan Adler's Happy Chic Colours and Happy Chic Accessorising are your must buys. I've been nosing through them on my Tube commutes for the past week and have on several occasions I've been so engrossed in his upbeat and exciting ideas that I've nearly missed my stop! Expect to find inspired colour themes inside 'Colours', with Benjamin Moore shades picked out for many of the colour themes so you can literally shop the looks you like. You'll also find product 'inspiration boards' that give plenty of shopping ideas whether you're looking to makeover a whole room, or just a standalone statement piece. 'Accessorising' is equally as inspiring: the collection of divine vases (seen below) made me rethink the ability to make an impact by grouping multiple vases of varying shapes. Plus, throughout the book Jonathan shares his tips and reasoning behind why he accessorised his home the way he did, giving the title an informal and accessible tone. Here are some of my favourite pages from the issue...

{Sneak Peek: New Jonathan Adler Books}

What better why to brighten up that midweek slump than with a little sneak peek into Jonathan Adler's two forthcoming books. 'Colors' and 'Accessorizing' are both out in November and you won't win any prizes for guessing how much I'm looking forward to reading them. A big thanks to Suze who gave me the heads up that the French Elle Decoration team had published these Gilles Trillard snaps of Jonathan and Simon's NYC apartment. Swoonalicious, much? We're talking symmetry to make your inner OCD yelp with delight, and enough colour to keep this Bright.Bazaar boy happy, happy, happy!

{A Jonathan Adler Inspired Home Tour}

Picture the scene. Coffee steaming. Buble merrily singing away. Laptop on. A quick perouse of my fave sites. And then, BAM! This fantastic tour of Suze Yalof from Dwellers Without Decorators pops up on desire to inspire. Excited is not the word! The eclectic collection of blue and green vases? Yes, please. Two green armchairs? Yes, please. My own little basket in the hallway for all my bits? Yes, please. A grey and white hallway with an owl umbrella stand? You guessed it: Yes, please! If this was my apartment I would be over the moon; what a delight! It's colourful and cosy, whilst sophisticated and welcoming at the same time. Suze, if you're reading, your apartment rocks and thank you for sharing your space.

{Colour Inspiration: Bright Accents}

Another fun item on NBC's Today Show, and this time it's all about the latest trend for decorating with bright accent colours. I liked the simple ideas they had for adding colour into decorating schemes, including their suggestions of colours that compliment one another; turquoise and yellow = gorgeous! If this video gets you in the mood to shop colourful accessories, then be sure to check out the newly redesigned Jonathan Adler website.

{Office Inspiration: Jonathan Adler's home office}

Ok, so I'm going to biased because I'm already a huge Jonathan Adler fan, but how could I resist blogging about his office when it has that delightful seahorse lamp? As soon as I saw the feature on Apartment Therapy I was itching to share my enthusiasm for his space. Jonathan may have filled his office with items from his own collections, but I don't see any problem in that; it's nice to see that he believes in his brand, in fact I'd go as far to say he lives and breathes it. His office space is an extension of his homewares and pottery business: it doesn't take itself too seriously, and it certainly doesn't look like your average home office.

For a start, the desk is in the centre of the room, which instantly creates a space that's much more informal and relaxed than many offices. Plus, the table is round, allowed for a softer feel compared to angular, more traditional rectangular shaped desks.

The Utopia Sun vase is one of Jonathan's favourite home items and it never leaves the table in his office. Sure, this is an expensive vase, but to me it would be one of those items I would save for and look forward to purchasing, treasuring it for many years once I owned it. The fact it looks as though it belongs in a Tim Burton film plays to my imaginative nature, only making me like it more.

Thanks to the open shelves and myriad of ornaments, vases and artifacts, there is quite an eclectic feel to this space. I see so many office environments that are modernist, stark and lifeless. It's nice to see a work space that can strike that balance between retaining some interest and personality, whilst not being too overbearing.

Another striking difference from traditional offices is the tactile experience that Jonathan's home office offers. There are no uncomfortable or hideous swivel chairs in sight. Instead, there's a comfy armchair, over sized rug and plenty of soft textiles and funky cushions. Somehow, though, the space still retains the feel that it is an office and a space for working. Jonathan, in the unlikely event that you're reading this, please do share how you manage to do this!
